Do You Need Rental Car Insurance?

Many clients ask “do I need rental car insurance coverage?” Well that depends on several different factors. Most insurance policies within the US will transfer over to our rental vehicles, but you want to make sure you and the car are covered without breaking the bank and paying for extra coverage you do not need. 

Do I need rental Car Insurance Coverage?

Step 1: check your personal auto policy. Your insurance binder will have what coverages you currently have and will be in your online portal for each major insurance provider. We will verify your coverage for every vehicle with your consent. You may also contact your provider to see what coverages you have before hand. If you carry comprehensive and liability coverage on your personal car, coverage typically will extend to your rental car within the United States.

Most rental cars in the US of similar value to your personal car, will likely be enough for the rental coverage. Keep in mind that if you are wanting to rent a brand new Lamborghini you may not be covered. Verification will need to be done before each rental. 

-Credit card company, if you use it for your car rental booking they may also provide extended coverage to you. If there are any gaps in coverage with your personal auto policy, the credit card company could provide secondary coverage. 

Do we offer Rental Car coverage and what Is Covered Under A Typical Rental Car Insurance Policy?

We do not offer additional coverage. Many rental car companies will try to sell you insurance you do not need.

Rental car insurance is usually broken out into the following coverages:

• Liability coverage
• Personal accident insurance
• Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/Loss Damage Waiver
• Personal Effects Coverage

Insurance you likely already have

-Liability coverage. This is the foundation and most basic component of most car insurance policies. If you have adequate liability coverage on your own vehicle (check with your insurance provider), you may choose to skip this one.

-Personal accident insurance. If you have health insurance or personal injury protection on your personal auto policy this is not needed. This insurance covers your medical bills in the event of a crash in the rental car. 

Rental Car Coverages that might be worth purchasing

-Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/Loss Damage Waiver. This is not insurance, but it will waiver the financial responsibility from you to us in case of damage or theft. This will also provide coverage for “loss of use” while the car is repaired or out of commission. Please inquire with us if you would like this coverage or chose it during checkout.

-Personal Effects Coverage. Surprisingly and what most people do not know is if you have homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance your personal items being stolen or damaged in the event of a car break in or other accident may already be covered by your policy. Check with your policy to make sure you are covered.

⚡️Tesla Superchargers are located at the Pearl Ridge Mall in the parking lot next to Longs Drugs. 

⚡️There are many free chargers. Download plugshare or the Volta apps to find them. The adapter provided J1772 in the center console can be used to charge at public stations. Most public charges provide 15-22 miles per hour.

⚡️You May also charge with a regular wall outlet with the charging connector provided in the car. This will only charge at 3miles per hour. 

⚡️Check with your hotel for charging. Some will charge it for you. 

⚡️If you can, it is recommended to charge overnight. If this is not possible you must plan your trip to find chargers around the island. We are always available to help if needed. 

⚡️Do not let the car go below 50miles of range without charging. 

We are one of the only Tesla rental agencies in the nation with the ability to activate this mode! The mode allows the Model X and Model S to travel and accelerate at speeds faster than most super cars in production today! 0-60 in 2.4 seconds for  the Model S and 0-60 in 2.7 for the Model X! When the mode is activated your range on the vehicle will be reduced due to the increased battery power usage. However, it is easily turned on and off. Please plan accordingly. 

Everyone should experience this because it is unlike anything you have ever done in a car! 

⚡️There are fast chargers ran by Hawaiian Electric on the island that require a CHADEMO adapter, which you may add to your trip. You will get 130-200 miles per hour of charge depending on what Tesla model you are charging.  All newer Tesla models are compatible. Tap the button for locations of the fast chargers and the current charging rates.

This depends on the Model you book with us. Below are our current Models with there associated range:

1. Model S- 255 mile range

2. Model 3- 240-260 mile range

3. Model X- 289 mile range

4. Model Y SR- 245 mile range

5. Model Y LR- 325 mile range

*All our vehicles are set to charge to 80% of there max range. This is based off Tesla recommendations for daily driving habits. 

Several hotels around the island offer free charging when parking your vehicle as a a guest of the resort. We highly recommend staying at one of these hotels or add our ChaDemo adapter to ensure an enjoyable experience with our Tesla's. Below is a list of our recommended locations:
